3-days Tour – Timna Park, Ramon Crater, Dead Sea, Masada & Jerusalem
Wednesday-Friday, December 10-12, 2014

Wednesday, December 10th, 2014
Timna Park & Ramon Crater

After breakfast, departure from Eilat to Timna Park, the site of the world’s first copper mine. Thousands of ancient mining shafts can be seen throughout the park as well as remaining of smelting furnaces dating back to ancient imperial Egypt. Copper was the first metal used to create work and household tools, weapons, costly ornaments and cultic objects. You will thrill at the stories of Hathor, the goddess of copper, and the deified Pharaoh Ramses, and also find remnants of Egyptian mythology and fascinating history. The multimedia presentation “The Mines of Time” brings these stories alive, and explains copper-mining from ancient Egyptian times to t present day.

We will then continue to Mitzpe Ramon, Ramon Crater, a geological feature of Israel's Negev desert. Located at the peak of Mount Negev, 85 km south of the city of Beersheba, the landform is not actually an impact crater from a meteor, but rather the world's largest makhtesh. The crater is 40 km long, 2-10 km wide and 500 meters deep, and is shaped like an elongated heart. The only settlement in the area is the small town of Mitzpe Ramon Ramon Observation Point, located on the northern edge of the. Today the crater and its surrounding area form Israel's largest national park, the Ramon Nature Reserve. We will continue to Kfar Hanokdim for overnight, a green oasis shaded by palm trees and crowned with biblically inspired gardens. Walking into Kfar Hanokdim reveals a picturesque scene: Bedouin tents comfortably fitted with colorful rugs and mattresses, "Divans" (i.e.: Function halls, suitable for dining, seminars and lectures) built from wood, local stone, decorated carpets and fabrics woven from black goat's hair. Desert style guest rooms amongst conveniently positioned shady seated areas.

Dead Sea & Masada

Departure from Kfar Hanokdim for a full-day tour of the Arava Valley and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, where you can take a salty yet relaxing swim -420 meters (1,378 ft) below sea level. Biblically, it was a place of refuge for King David and was one of the world’s first health resorts, for Herod the Great. An assortment of mineral waters of various qualities is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments, as well as for manufacturing the famous Dead Sea cosmetics lines. Visit the delightful Ein Gedi Spa and continue to Masada, a rugged natural fortress of majestic beauty and history - where you will ascend to the top of the mountain via cable car. Masada became a famous landmark after the first Jewish-Roman war, when a siege of the fortress by troops of the Roman Empire led to a mass suicide of the site’s Jewish Sicarii fugitives.
