Under the Microscope: Corns, Callus and Keratoma

The aetiology of callus and corns is not straight forward. Considerable research has been conducted on foot pressures but some clinical features remain obscurred. Several hypotheses are proposed which revolve around sub-epidermal changes associated within the plantar ‘soft tissue envelope’. The close relationship with fibrous based tissue is currently understated within the formation of the Type 4 keratin lesion, where the skin becomes hypertrophic, and the underlying tissue is represented by deeper tissue changes. New material is presented alongside the importance of keratin tissue classification.

Case History

A 69-year old female patient presents with a type 4 plantar keratoma. Adipofasciocutaneous coverage is performed (Schrudde transpositional flap) and case reviewed over 6 months. Critical outcome performance is measured using  PASCOM-10; PSQ-10 and MOXFQ scores.

Myths, Facts, Fables and the Foot

While the basis of our learning comes from college, we must reflect from our own clinical experience. How far do feet truly walk in a lifetime? Does a Greek foot have any bearing on Morton’s neuroma? Are calcaneal spurs associated with heel pain? Can we select fact from myth or empiricism, and does it matter? The lecture may improve debate, understanding and personal thought processes and intended to be of general interest.
