Prof. Dominique Valla

Dominique Valla is a professor of hepatology at Université Paris Diderot and Hôpital Beaujon (HUPNVS, APHP, Clichy, France). He was the head of liver unit in Hôpital Beaujon, from 1999 to 2013. He has founded and is directing the French reference center for vascular diseases of the liver. Since 2013, he has been the founding coordinator of Département hospitalo-universitaire (DHU) UNITY, a network connecting  hospital units (Hôpitaux Universitaires Paris-Nord Val-de-Seine), university teams (Université Paris Diderot), and research groups (Centre de Recherche de l’Inflammation Paris-Montmartre, Inserm) focusing on digestive diseases. His clinical activities are focused on rare liver diseases. He is involved in clinical research on portal hypertension, complications of chronic liver diseases, and vascular liver diseases

Studied Medicine at the Medical Unviersity of Vienna, Graduation 2005. Residency Internal Medicine at the Vienna General Hospital associated with the Medical University of Vienna 2006-2012. Venia docendi 2011. Head of the Viral Hepatitis / HIV Coinfection Outpatient Clinic at the Vienna General Hospital, And group lead at the Hepatic Hemodynamic Lab at the Medical University of Vienna

Research interests: liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, viral hepatitis, angiogenesis, fibrogenesis

 

 

Juan Gonzalez Abraldes

Dr. Juan G. Abraldes is Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Dr Abraldes gained his MD in 1995 from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and got his Board Certificate in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Liver Unit, Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona (2000). He did a postdoctoral training at Yale University (2003–2004), gaining experience in pre-clinical models of portal hypertension and cirrhosis. He was a faculty member of the Hepatic Hemodynamic Laboratory and the Liver Unit, at Hospital Clinic Barcelona, until 2013, when he moved to Alberta. He is now co-director of the Cirrhosis Care Clinic of the University of Alberta. He has published over 150 papers on the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of portal hypertension. He has co-authored the international Baveno guidelines for the management of portal hypertension in 2005, 2010 and 2015. He is the co-author of the American Association for the Liver Clinical Guidance for the management of varices and variceal bleeding in cirrhosis

Dr Juan Carlos García Pagán is a senior medical consultant in Hepatology and the head of the Hepatic Hemodynamic Unit at the Hospital Clinic, an internationally renowned unit for its leadership in liver research placed in Barcelona. He is also a principal investigator of the “Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer” (IDIBAPS) in the area of pathophysiology and treatment of hepatic, pancreatic and gastroenterological diseases and a member of the Center for Biomedical Research Network of Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd).

On the clinical setting, the unit is considered as a world leader group of hepatic hemodynamics and portal hypertension and it is part of the renowned liver unit at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona.

His research has been focused on a better understanding of the mechanism responsible for the development of portal hypertension and its serious consequences responsible of cirrhotic patient mortality
