Dear Colleagues and Fellow EMC Engineers,

Welcome to the beautiful cosmopolitan city of Istanbul! On behalf of the IEEE EMC Society, the Organizing Committee it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2003 IEEE International Symposium on EMC for an entire week of EMC, hosted in the former capital of three successive empires, bridging East and West.

This is the first time that this very important and prestigious Symposium is held in Region 8 of IEEE and we are therefore honored to have the opportunity to host the Symposium, for the very first time, in Turkey.

The Symposium on was relocated from Tel-Aviv Israel to Istanbul, Turkey, due to current events in Israel.

The Organizing Committee has been working with great enthusiasm to plan for and organize a memorable event. We trust that we made an excellent and very attractive choice: After all, what makes a city beautiful?

It is the uniqueness and splendour but also its character that is laid deep in its roots, the tradition and the cultural heritage.

Istanbul, the new host city, is unique in the sense that it is built on two continents, Europe and Asia, bridging over East and West with two suspension bridges over the Bosphorus. Those bridges symbolize the bridge these International Symposia make across the EMC professional world and EMC professionals worldwide, bringing them together, experts and students alike, regardless of country of Origin.

Under the leadership of Dr. Alex Axelrod, the Technical Program Committee has lined up a remarkable and exciting Technical Program with something for everyone attending the Symposium: Technical papers form almost 50 countries, supplemented by a large variety of workshops, tutorials, special invited sessions and innovative "Birds of a Feather" forums will cover stimulating topics. We take great pleasure in inviting you to actively participate in this Symposium, which serves as a forum for engineers, technicians and scientists to discuss their personal views, theories and solutions to our volatile and exciting electromagnetic environment.

With over 400 papers accepted for presentation, presentations are arranged in over 40 sessions, to be held over 4 days in 6 or more parallel tracks.

The year 2003 marks 100 years of modern powered aviation (1903-2003) since the Wright Brother's first Flight. Special events, sessions, workshops and excursions will be held in commemoration of this important milestone in the world of transportation. We are especially honored to have Dr. Nigel Carter from DRA, UK, who will give the Keynote address during the Plenary Session and Opening Ceremony, to be held on the morning of Monday, 12 May, 2003 on the topic “Past, Present and Future Challenges of Aircraft EMC”.

For your relaxation and enjoyment, lunch is included in your registration fees, and social events accompanying the Symposium will also give you "get together" opportunities with your old colleagues and friends as well as get acquainted with new ones. Don’t miss the unforgettable evening events, which will be held in some of the most magnificent sites in exotic Istanbul.

The success of the Symposium relies on the dedication and efforts of numerous people. From the Organizing Committee who started working on the preparations nearly seven years ago, to the International Advisory Committee and International Advisory Technical Council as well as the Invited Session Organizers who assisted in many ways to make this Symposium become a reality. To all I would like to express our special thanks and appreciation. Many thanks also to the Symposium Secretariat for their dedication and support.

We are also most grateful to the handful of patrons and supporting organizations, who provided support to the Symposium in monetary terms and other means, in spite of the current uncertain economic climate.

Our Committee is doing its best to carefully select a wide variety of activities that you can do on your own, with friends or with your family, before, during and after the symposium. A diverse and exciting hospitality program will make this Symposium a memorable experience also for accompanying persons and families. Take the opportunity of your visit to tour Turkey and its magnificent sites.

I conclusion, may this Symposium, in the cosmopolitan city of Istanbul, also form the bridge between people, making EMC the bridge of cooperation and exchange of technical information between people and professional societies and enhancing the quality of life for all people throughout the world through the constructive application of technology.

Welcome to Istanbul!
