a Medieval Journey
Wednesday, September 8, 2004 – Friday, September 10, 2004
| Wednesday, September 8, 2004 |
| Arrival and overnight at your chosen hotel. |
| |
| Thursday, September 9, 2004 |
| Departure to a visit to the Valley
of Baztán, which is in the most northern
part of Navarra. The shields on the façades
of the houses show the noble origin of the people of this valley,
recognized by the king in the XV century. Drive from Pamplona
with a stop at the Mirador Del Baztán
for a beautiful view of the valley. Continue to a visit to Zugarramurdi,
a Cave where the witches celebrated their Akelarres (parties).
Then visit to Elizondo and a break for lunch.
Elizondo is the capital and the commercial
centre of the valley. There it is possible to see typical Basque
houses and “Indiano” style, which were built by
the people who returned from America. Proceed to a visit to
the Natural Park Of Bertiz more than 2.000
hectares of beech trees, oaks and chestnuts. The area we visit
is an exotic garden with 120 kinds of trees, which is situated
on the lowest part, by the Bidasoa River. The garden has waterfalls,
artificial lakes and nesting birds. Return to Pamplona and overnight
in your chosen hotel. |
| |
| Friday, September 10, 2004 |
| Departing Pamplona and begin the tour with a
visit to the Monastery of Leyre. The first
mentioning of this monastery dates back to the X century. It
is the seat and court of the Pyrenean Dominion and Panteon Regio
of the Monarcas Vascones. Proceed to the town of Sangüesa,
which was the border with the kingdom of Aragon, thus a very
important stop on the way of the pilgrims. The monuments to
visit are the Church of Santa María
(XII century), with one of the most important Romanesque style
façades in Spain, and the Palace of the Principe
de Viana, residence of the kings of Navarra (XII -
XIII century). Lunch break and visit of the Basilica
and Parroquia (Chapel) of Castillo
de Javier, where San Francisco Javier was born in 1506.
The castle was founded around a tower from the XI century and
was finished at the end of the XV century. It is placed in the
border of the kingdom of Aragón and became one of the
most important buildings of Navarra. In 1516, after the annexation
of Navarra to the kingdom of Castilla, the castle was destroyed.
The castle stayed untouched until the end of the XIX century
when renovation work has begun. Return to Pamplona. |

including the old Town Hall (XVII century);
the Kings’ Palace (XII century), the
Church of San Pedro de la Rúa, the Church
of San Miguel Arcángel (XII
– XVI centuries) and Santo Sepulcro Church
(XIII century). Continue to a visit to Puente la Reina,
the imposing Romanesque seven-span bridge (XI century) and town,
whose importance is due to being at a crossroads on the Pilgrims’
Way. Puente la Reina has two important churches: the Church
of Santiago el Mayor with its Romanesque facade, Barroque
tower and French Gothic images in its interior; and the Church
of the Crucifix founded by the Templar in the XII century.
The main street (Calle Mayor) is a good example of the Jacobean
architecture. Proceed to a visit to the Church of Santa

church built in the XII century placed in the Pilgrims’
way to Santiago, and stands alone in a beautiful scenery of
opened and flat land. Return to Pamplona and overnight in your

Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - Wednesday, September 15, 2004
| Tuesday, September 14, 2004 |
| Departing Pamplona for a visit to Saint

are the Town Hall, the theatre Victoria
Eugenia, the María Cristina Hotel,
the Miramar Royal Palace and the Gipuzcoa
Diputación (Regional Government), as well as
the bridges Kursaal and María
Cristina, which make up a fascinating place. We will

| Departing Pamplona for a visit to Bilbao old
and new parts as well as the famous Guggenheim Museum. Bilbao
was founded on 1300, as a privilege from the Lord of Bizkaia.
The Pilgrims’ Road has a strong influence on its development,
being also the way to get the coast from Castilla. During XV
and XVI centuries Bilbao was an important commercial center
for iron and ship makers. On the XIX century Bilbao was expanded
and new buildings (the new town hall and the Theatre Arriaga,
inspired by the Opera Garnier from Paris) were constructed by
well-known architects such as Frank O’Ghery, Norman Foster
and Calatrava. On the XXI century Bilbao is going to be one
of the most important and biggest cities in Spain due to its
developed industry. |
